Powering IMAX Film Cameras

These large-format film cameras shoot 65mm film in several frame dimensions on the negative.  Rigs go on helicopters, underwater, and occasionally handheld. Cameras run on 28 to 36 Volt power supplies, and for years crews struggle using conventional lead-acid batteries. Producers are looking for improved, lighter-weight and longer lived power sources.

I got a call from a client today, and we discussed the adaptation of  DEWALT's 36-volt power tool battery products to their needs. I had suggested this investigation back in 2007, when DeWalt introduced A123's "nano" variant of the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cell to the cordless tool market. I'm not sure how successful the product has been in that market, but the electric vehicle market has shown lots of interest. The actual cells are not as power-dense as the typical 18650 cells used in laptop and camcorder power packs, but their ability to put out heavy current is something to rave about. The specs show practical currents maxing at 20 to 40 amp loads through a string of series cells. Fast charge (1 hour or less) is another feature.

Here at Automated Media Systems plans are underway toward development of a battery system for powering these IMAX cameras that will considerably reduce the battery weight and increase cycle life, while offering operation at 80% capacity down in the sub zero temperature ranges.

It is also anticipated that efforts during development will evaluate and field test the application of Lithium-polymer cells toward inclusion in our Portable Solar Charging systems to replace Lead-Acid Batteries and reduce weight. I especially like the low self-discharge qualities of the Li-Polymer cells. More as tests yield data.

Canon Interface Developments

This is all recent stuff.  The earlier cameras' interface adapters are as ever.
Canon often uses the CA-570 connection for DC power. Check your AC Mains Adapter/Charger. The CA-570 connection is a concentric power connector--like the connection to many "wall wart" powered devices.

Panasonic Hi Def Cameras

Feb. 2011--There are some very impressive new models of Panasonic camcorders that we have been supplying with Expedition Batteries. More to come.
